Minesweeper’s rules are straightforward. The game presents a grid of covered tiles. Some of these tiles conceal mines (bombs), and the rest are safe. The player’s goal is to uncover all the safe tiles without hitting a mine. Classic Minesweeper offers preset difficulty levels: Beginner (around an 8×8 or 9×9 grid with 10 mines), Intermediate (16×16 with 40 mines), and Expert (30×16 with 99 mines), as well as custom settings.
In terms of programming complexity, Minesweeper isn’t very demanding. The grid is usually not huge (even expert level is 480 cells), and the operations are simple (counting neighbors, revealing cells). The main algorithmic challenges are ensuring the random placement of mines yields a valid, fair board and handling the flood-fill efficiently so that large openings are revealed instantly without lag.
Before you commence a session of Minesweeper online, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the different settings and difficulty levels available. The grid comes in varying sizes, accommodating different skill sets and providing a customized gaming experience.
For example, a tile showing “3” can be thought of as an equation stating: out of the 8 neighbouring positions, 3 are mines and 5 are not. If right next to it there’s a tile showing “2”, that provides a similar equation for its neighbours. These clues overlap and interact, and solving the board is equivalent to solving all these constraints together. Players do this intuitively with logic rules and pattern recognition, but one could also approach it systematically with algorithms.

It is guaranteed that the first square you open won’t contain a mine, so you can start by clicking any square. Often you’ll hit on an empty square on the first try and then you’ll open up a few adjacent squares as well, which makes it easier to continue. Then it’s basically just looking at the numbers shown, and figuring out where the mines are.
Today, we’ve brought it to the web — lightning-fast, accessible anywhere, and tailored for both beginners and pros. Whether you’re revisiting it or discovering it for the first time, Minesweeper never goes out of style.
Playing Minesweeper online is a timeless way to test your logic, improve focus, and have fun. With our clean design, mobile-first layout, and no in-game ads, it’s one of the best ways to enjoy this puzzle classic on any device.
You’ve won the game when you’ve opened all squares that don’t contain a mine. If you’ve opened all the empty/nr squares but haven’t flagged the mine squares remaining, they will be auto-flagged and you have won. So, essentially flagging is not required, it’s only there to help you keep track of where you think the mines are. The real way to win is open all the non-mine squares. This can be used to gain a tiny bit of speed if you’re trying to improve your time 🙂

Board generation – there are three types of board generation. Random board generation simply places the mines randomly. “Safe first try” generation places mines randomly except it does not place any mines within the 1-tile radius of where the player started the game. “Pure intellect” creates a board in such a way so that it is deterministically solvable. That is, at any point in the game, you will not have to rely on luck. All you need to do is to use logic, and if you do it well you have 100% chance of solving the game. “Pure intellect” is unavailable if there are problems with your Internet connection.
Difficulty – there are five presets available: beginner (9 × 9 tiles and 10 mines), intermediate (16 × 16 tiles and 40 mines), expert (30 × 16 tiles and 99 mines), superhuman (50 × 50 tiles and 500 mines), and extraterrestrial (100 × 100 tiles and 2000 mines). The player can also choose a custom board size. There is no theoretical limit on the number of tiles or mines of the custom board. However, larger boards tend to slow down the game and very large boards may cause an unstable behavior of your web browser. Experiment at your own risk.
Minesweeper Flags In MSN / Windows Live Messenger there is the possibility to play against a contact in the list. In this version of the game there are 51 mines distributed on the field, the first thing to do is to uncover 26 mines. One field is uncovered alternately; whoever finds a mine may uncover one more. In addition, each player has the option to detonate a bomb once in each game, which will reveal a 5×5 field of his choice completely at once (if the player is behind). Do not mark mines (non-flagging – NF) In this version of the game the player does not mark any mines. So you are not allowed to use the right mouse button during the game. You have won automatically, if you have cleared all fields, except the mined ones, with the help of the left mouse button. The difficulty of this game variant lies in the fact that you have to remember the identified mine positions. In order to achieve best times on the beginner and advanced level, many professionals use this variant partially even on the whole playing field. Since the best times of the world’s best players in the variant non-flagging are only slightly lower than their best times in the normal game and non-flagging is played less often, it can be assumed that non-flagging, although more difficult for the beginner, is not slower than flagging. Since 2009, in addition to the official world ranking, which includes both flagging and non-flagging games, there is also an official ranking, which is exclusively reserved for non-flagging best times. Increase mine density Another difficulty is the increase of the mine density in the custom/user defined variant. The starting point is usually the largest playing field, which is occupied by 99 mines in the standard variant. Such a field can still be solved with some practice; however, times under 150 seconds require good practice. However, clearing a square of this size becomes more difficult the more densely the square is occupied. Fields with 130 to 140 mines (28%) already have a very high degree of difficulty. Having even more mines laid already results in many failed attempts to get only a first approach to mine clearance.
